Since 1974, World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on 5 June, engaging governments, businesses and citizens in an effort to address pressing environmental issues.<\/p>\n
This year’s World Environment Day theme is ecosystem restoration. For too long, we have been exploiting and destroying our planet\u2019s ecosystems. Every three seconds, the world loses enough\u00a0forest\u00a0to cover a football pitch and over the last century we have\u00a0destroyed half\u00a0of our\u00a0wetlands. As much as 50 per cent of our coral reefs have already been lost…<\/p>\n
This World Environment Day will kick off the\u00a0UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration<\/a>, a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.<\/p>\n Every World Environment Day is hosted by a different country in which official celebrations take place. This year’s host is Pakistan. Most events will be held online, and some of them start today.<\/p>\n
